Scalp and Hair Coloring Tips to Make Hair Look Thicker, Fuller, Voluminous
Did you know that experimenting with hair colors and dyes is one of the best ways to hide and thin strands and make them look voluminous? WomensRogaine recommends experimenting with color and different highlights in order to expand and shafts and make them look thicker. Generally, here’s how to color thin hair to make it appear fuller:
- The tip, sometimes called scalp coloring for thinning hair is the same as going one, two or even three shades lighter depending on your skin color or tone. This will make the scalp with thin hair less noticeable and give the impression of thicker, fuller hair.
- You should hair dye to cover thinning hair more than grey hair. According to Vibrant Nation, your hair will soak in a volumizing hair dye and swell up. This way, it will appear to be thicker. It is known that lighter colors such as blonde shades tend to draw in light and make hair look fuller and thicker.
- In order to hide thinning hair by coloring thin hair, try dark roots and have lighter highlights. This will create an illusion of volume and thickness too.
- Avoid ombre hair dyes if your hair is fine. With ombre tones, the dark hair at the top and light tips that come at the bottom will automatically accentuate thinning around the crown.

Gentle Hair Color for Thinning Hair is Best
Gentle hair care is the rule of the thumb for fine hair. That starts with gentle shampoo for thinning hair, conditioners and even other gentle hair care products.
Fine hair, according to Schwarzkopf, is not necessarily sparse or thin on your scalp. When most people talk about thin hair and fine hair, they mostly mean the same thing. Generally, the problem has to do with the thickness of individual strands.
Thinning, fine hair is “bout 2 thousandth of an inch (2 mil or points) thinner than regular or strong hair. It is also a little more sensitive.” (Schwarzkopf). Even some people who have a lot of hair, they may still have thinner hair than those suffering from sparse hair distribution. Women with dark hair have on average 100,000 hairs on their head. Blondes have about 150,000 hairs.
- Regardless of your natural hair color, if you have this problem, you should consider gentle hair colors, powders and sprays for thin hair.
- Permanent hair colors are not the best for thickening thinner hair. Instead, opt for long lasting hair dye.
- Volumizing color sprays that are safe can help you with styling and adding thickness to your strands. Safest hair color for thinning hair.

Best Hair Color to Hide Thinning Hair Gray Hair
How can you use hair color to cover thin gray hair? Yes, very possible. According to WebMD, you can do hair coloring for hair loss and hair thinning. “…your hair can benefit from permanent or semipermanent color to give body and volume to hair.” (WebMD – see sources at the end.)
Semi-permanent hair dye is better than permanent hair color for thin hair because it does not contain ammonia or other harsh chemicals such as peroxide. Not only will it give it volume but it will also prevent it from getting damaged.
NOTE: If your hair is grey with a fine texture, you can apply both permanent and semi permanent color, but I wouldn’t advise you to do this at home. You can easily overprocess it and end up damaging it. Sooner or later, you can even start seeing problems like hair loss. Therefore, look for a professional hair colorist to do it for you.
Another tip supplied by Allwomenstalk is that a change of color will also be a good way to hide thin hair. According to their website, “darker shades of hair makes thinning more noticeable…” This is likely to be the reason why hairdressers are likely to advise you to change your hair color.
Safe Hair Color Powder for Thinning Hair
Should you choose powder, spray or liquid hair dye? Well, this will depend on a number of things, including what your colorist thinks is the right product and brand for you. Hair color powder for thinning hair is a fill-in powder that will help solve the look of balding areas on women and men.
This is safer to use as you will not tear out your hair as you apply as is usual with dyes. Fill-in powders for fine hair will blend in the empty spots and prevent your scalp from showing through. It is a much easier and safe way to cover up thinning spots. One of the products that fills in and also hides gray hair perfectly is Claudia Stevens Cover That Gray Fill-In Powder.
Hair Color Ideas for Thin Hair
Coloring ideas for thin and fine hair don’t have to be restricted to the specific colors we have mentioned above. The basic rule when selecting the good hair color ideas is to think of colors that will de-emphasize the thin look and give your hair the illusion of thickness. Alternatively, good ideas would be those that will cover up thinning spots.
Generally, go for lighter colors as we have already seen. Blonde hair dyes would be good. Also choose according to your skin tone because you want to come as close to your natural skin tone as possible to avoid the contrast that will reveal thinning strands.

Hi Victoria! I like the tips you outline here. Your articles are always helpful, I must say, except for the photos on hair colors for dark skin. 🙂 Anyway, it is not easy to determine the best hair color for thin hair or fine hair. A good hair colorist can play around with scalp coloring and highlighting to help create an impression of thick hair. I have had thin hair for a few years now and all sorts of hair supplements do not help it thicken. So, my hair colorist is my only solution for now.
My natural hair is dark, so what she does is that she creates lighter highlights on my thinning hair in order to diminish the contrast between my fine hair and the scalp. The whole point is to create a multidimensional look such as creating a medium base with both lowlights and highlights. She tells me this creates an illusion of movement. This solution can also work for people who are suffering from mild hair loss (alopecia), or coloring damaged fine hair. Always and always get a good hair color for your thinning hair. I hope this helps you add thickness and volume to your frail hair.
How about henna for thin hair and coloring?
Henna is by far the best type of hair colour. Be sure not to use ones tha have PPD in them though. ITs just like ammonia
Semi-permanent hair color is useless for gray. Also, not everyone who has thinning hair has fragile, breakable hair. It may not even be dry. Nature just decided you’d have less for whatever reason: seasonal, hormones, aging, hair loss after surgery, whatever. But dyed hair is harder to get a comb through after washing and you may find even more hairs in the sink with that going on.
I have very thinning hair due to hormonal changes I have tried different colors at the moment I have many very blonde streaks and darker roots but find after few washes hair goes orange which looks very ageing and thinner. I am at wits end re my hair, please help.
I am a male with thin, graying hair who every six weeks or so uses men’s hair coloring to a light brown. When it becomes oily and needs washing I often very effectively rub a small amount of Johnson’s Baby Powder between my hands and then rub it into my hair and it immediately reduces the oil and grooms greatly–at least for the day. The only trouble is that the powder is white. I need a light brown powder– kind of like the Johnson’s Baby Powder product. I’ve tried brown spray-on products but they are messy, getting on seemingly everything. Why not a brown shake on, rub in product for hair? I’m referring to a canister with several ounces of product and not a small one or two-inch brush product. Suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Leonard. Thanks for your comment. As far as I know, there aren’t many products in the market that both fit the dry shampoo, powder, and dark tint form but there are a couple of options you could try out. One is the new Dry Shampoo for Dark Tones by Morrocanoil and Bumble’s and Bumble’s Hair Powder in Tint of Brown. The latter is actually a dry shampoo powder suited for brown hair, which is exactly what you are seeking for. Hope this helps…
Try 3D hair my hairdresser puts it on my baldy spot and it covers great. Only down side is if it rains it gets clogged on your scalp.
I’ve just read your articles and didn’t know that dyeing my 56 year old thin, naturally dark blonde, hair could make it fall out. Two weeks ago I used Ion hair dye light auburn(brown red) and a week after my hair has been falling out like crazy, pretty scarry. When I rinse my shampoo out the hair feels hard and matted. It’s never done that before then when I apply the conditioner and comb it thru with my fingers is when all the hair comes out in my fingers. Do your have any suggestions for me?
I was involved in an explosion in my kitchen a week ago today. I’m still in BICU. My question is my hair was singed about 4 inches all around, plus ar the beginning of my hairline, is now about a 1/4 of an inch long. I really would love some advice on the best color and cut to make my hair look fuller and cover the almost bad spot
Thank you

Why users still use to read news papers when in this technological world everything is existing on net?
I have always had thin hair but after menopause and some dietary issues my hair has become so noticeably thin that I can’t cover many balding areas anymore. My natural color is a dark brown but at age 63, I am probably at least 50% gray. Highlights are a No No for thin, brittle hair and I would have to use harsh color to even go a little bit lighter. Doctors said to use permanent hair color very sparingly and only go to a professional. My hair is starting to not hold dye for long so it can get very expensive to go to salons and the truth is with it getting so thin, they can only make me look so good at quite the cost. I have been wanting to let it go gray and I have no ‘age’ issues with that but when you have very fine hair, especially on the top, going grey makes you look even more bald. I wish someone would finally come up with a way to help women with thinning hair. The issue most women have with going gray would not be an issue for me if I actually had some hair. Very depressing.
My situation is the same, except that mine has been thinning since my 30s for unknown reasons. I eat well, exercise, take care of myself. There is nothing else I can do. So I decided to wear a hairpiece. For the past 10 years I feel so much better and I never have bad hair days 🙂
I tried synthetic, synthetic blend and human hair. The first 2 are a waste of money. I decided to put out big money and get a handmade hairpiece from a reputable wig maker. No one has figured out that I wear a hairpiece it is that good. I love my hair every day.
I;m 35 and my hair is thin and fine. it is shedding like hell. It is dark brown. I can’t afford a salon.
Most people I talk to have no idea that scalp therapy shampoos for fast hair growth (of course with no sulfates, no parabens and no DEA) exist. We can now experience longer hair and enjoy more options. Surely worth researching.
Whether you’re dealing with hair loss, damaged hair, preventing hair disorders, hair growth, hair health more often than not, similar principles become relevant.
For the most part, you should try to avoid hair treatments and products that contain chemicals like parabens, DEA or sulfates.
What’s beneficial for your hair is beneficial for your skin all the same.
Obviously your content above is so useful for many reasons. It stays away from the accustomed errors and pitfalls so many fall into: utilizing defective alternatives. Thank you so much!
